The history of Gallery Chemould dates back to the 1940s, when Kekoo Gandhy made the decision to open a picture-framing business on Princess Street, which is now a byword in the art world. The Progressive Artists Group, which included K.H. Ara, M.F. Husain, S.H. Raza, F.N. Souza, and others, came to this store, Chemould Frames. That identical window was where Husain sold his first painting. The businessman Naval Tata and the scientist Homi Bhabha were two of the few wealthy consumers that Kekoo Gandhy attracted to his store during that time. The Jehangir Art Gallery management asked his friends Kekoo and Khorshed to open an art gallery in a vacant first-floor room in the 1960s. The rising group of Indian painters, including K.K. Hebbar, V.S. Gaitonde, Laxman Pai, and others, displayed their works during the opening of Gallery Chemould on September 16, 1963. It developed into a testing ground for the city's eyes. Eventually, Chemould relocated to a large new location, which is now known as Chemould Prescott Road and is owned by Shireen Jungalwala, their daughter. With a diverse group of outstanding artists, including Vivan Sundaram, Neelima Sheikh, Atul and Anju Dodiya, Jitesh Kallat, and Reena Saini-Kallat, the gallery's new incarnation maintains its support for modern art.
