One of the major problems facing the consumer movement in the country relates to lack of consumer education and awareness and North eastern region is no exception. Consumer movement in the North east is at an infancy. The implementation of Consumer Protection Act 1986 and 2019 remains unsatisfactory to a large extent. The three tier redressal mechanism lacks infrastructure and qualified manpower. There are very few programmes by the governments of North east states to empower consumers and take action against unscrupulous traders. It is also a fact that no comprehensive study has been done on consumer movement in the North east.
