Robert Clive compared Gomorrah favourably to Calcutta, the then-capital of British India, in a letter to Sir Francis Sykes in July 1765. Doolally Sahib and the Black Zamindar is a chronicle of racial relations between Indians and their last European invaders, sometimes frustrating but always captivating. It draws on the letters, diaries, and notebooks of traders, travellers, bureaucrats, officials, officers, and the rare bishop. Numerous examples, along with understanding and analysis, show how the deeply rooted belief in "white superiority" moulded this history. The British's decision to abandon a significant number of their own children because they felt this way is the best example of how strong this conviction was.
