Behind the walls of a house in a North Indian town a whole world thrives?of the joint family, their attendants, their visitors. Profound stories of love and loss are lightly delivered. Mai was her debut novel which was translated into English by Nita Kumar. This translation received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002 and was shortlisted for the Crossword Book Award in 2001. Geetanjali Shree?s debut novel MAI is a beautiful and mature read. The emotions of the narrator and the protagonists get conveyed across to the reader?s heart and mind in one swift stroke and make a permanent mark for sure. ?Motherhood?, as is evident from the title, is the central theme.
