Description

For more than a half-century, radio played an important role in an increasingly divided South Asia, broadcasting everything from World War II news to music from popular films. Radio for the Millions examines the history of Hindi-Urdu radio from the 1930s to the 1980s, demonstrating how it created transnational communities of listeners. According to Isabel Huacuja Alonso, despite British, Indian, and Pakistani politicians' efforts to usurp radio for state purposes, radio has largely escaped their grasp. She demonstrates how the medium enabled listeners and broadcasters to oppose the British colonial administration's cultural, linguistic, and political agendas, as well as the subsequent independent Indian and Pakistani governments.
